From 19 April 2017
- No further 457 visa can be granted on the removed occupations after 19th Apr 2017, whether it is an existing application or a new application.
- The new 457 visa occupation after 19th Apr 2017 must be from the new list called STSOL.
- Maximum validity for a 457 visa will be 2 years for all new and pending applications.
From 1 July 2017
- English language exemptions for high salary threshold ($96400) will be removed from 1 July 2017
- Police clearance will be required for all applicants from 1 July 2017
From March 2018
- Abolition and replacement of the 457 visa from Mar 2018. The 457 visa will be replaced with the new TSS visa. The TSS will have two streams.
- Short-term Stream
- Two-year maximum visa
- Visa renewal can be done once only
- For non-regional area – occupations must be from STSOL
- For regional area[1] – occupations must be from STSOL or from additional regional occupations.
- English – 5 overall with minimum 4.5 in IELTS or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years relevant work experience required
- Medium-term stream
- Medium-term stream
- Four-year maximum visa
- Permanent residency pathway after three years
- For non-regional area – occupations must be from STSOL
- For regional area[2] – occupations must be from STSOL or from additional regional occupations.
- English – 5 each in IELTS or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years relevant work experience required
- Short-term Stream
Changes of CSOL and SOL removing occupations[3]
- SOL is now MLTSSL
- 189, 489 relative, 485 visa can be applied from this list
- CSOL is now STSOL also called combined list
- 190, 489 State, 186 Direct entry, 457 and 407 visa can be applied from this list
- 200 occupations removed completely from CSOL and 16 are with restrictions to apply for regional Australia only.
- If your occupation is in this list, you cannot lodge 457 visa or nomination after 19April 2017.
- If you have already lodged and the decision is pending then you will be asked by the DIBP to withdraw the nomination and visa and apply for a refund.
There are three groups of caveat implemented on few occupations.
Group A: caveats relating to work experience only. Two years of full time relevant work experience may be required.
Group B: caveats related to regional location. The Group B occupations should be located in regional Australia.
Group C: occupation specific caveats – Different criteria applicable for different occupations in addition to the standard requirements.
